in hindsight: grading my 2015 grammy predictions

last friday, i consulted the crystal ball and, much like every year, i took to the ol’ blog to make a few predictions about yesterday’s 57th annual grammy awards.

so now, i’m here now to take a look at how i did. last year i didn’t exactly set the woods on fire, so let’s see how i did this year.

Album of the Year: WRONG πŸ™

who i picked to win: beyonce’s beyonce

who actually won: beck’s morning phase

i liked beck’s album, but i’m reallysurprised it won. it’s probably my least favorite beck album. i’m a beck fan, but i think this is another miss by the grammys.

Record of the Year: CORRECT πŸ™‚

who i picked to win: sam smith’s stay with me

who actually won: sam smith’s stay with me

Song of the Year: WRONG πŸ™

who i picked to win: sia’s chandelier

who actually won: sam smith’s stay with me

Best New Artist: CORRECT πŸ™‚

who i picked to win: sam smith

who actually won: sam smith

anybody who missed this prediction shouldn’t be in the business of predicting grammy winners…

Best Pop Solo Performance: CORRECT πŸ™‚

who i picked to win: pharrell williams’ happy (live)

who actually won: pharrell williams’ happy (live)

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance: CORRECT πŸ™‚

who i picked to win: a great big world/christina aguilera’s say something

who actually won: a great big world/christina aguilera’s say something

Best Pop Vocal Album: WRONG πŸ™

who i picked to win: ed sheeran’s x

who actually won: sam smith’s in the lonely hour

Best Rock Performance: WRONG πŸ™

who i picked to win: the black keys’ fever

who actually won: jack white’s lazaretto

fwiw, this is who i said i would’ve voted for

Best Alternative Music Album: CORRECT πŸ™‚

who i picked to win: st. vincent’s st. vincent

who actually won: st. vincent

i thought there was a 0% chance st. vincent would win. the last time a solo female act won this award was in 1991 (sinead o’connor), which was the first year of this category.

Best Rap Performance: CORRECT πŸ™‚

who i picked to win: kendrick lamar’s i

who actually won: kendrick lamar’s i

Best Rap Album: WRONG πŸ™

who i picked to win: common’s nobody’s smiling

who actually won: eminem’s the marshall matters lp2

i said i would’ve voted for eminem and i should’ve stuck to my gut on this one.

—————————–

so, out of 11 picks, i got 6 correct. i mean, that’s a 54%, but honestly, for predicting a weird grammy-voting group, that’s not too shabby (especially considering that last year, i got 3 of 11 correct).

all in all, i feel like i had a decent pulse on the awards this year. beyond the 6 that i got correct, there were 2 others where i said i would’ve voted for who actually won, despite predicting a different winner.

take a look at the list of all the winners.

let’s do this again next year, shall we?
