michael jackson bad 25h anniversary

for the majority of my childhood, two types of music comprised about 90% of my musical knowledge: southern gospel and oldies. of that 90%, about 75% of that was my dad’s (awful) southern gospel. occasionally we could beg him to turn on oldies on the car radio.

but then there was that 10%. the other piece of my childhood musical puzzle was the artist who any self respecting child of the 80s was obsessed with: michael jackson.

derek webb releases new album, ‘ctrl’

derek webb ctrl

last month after derek webb announced he was preparing to release a new album to be titled ctrl, we discovered an intriguing album description offered on his distributor’s website. the description read:

the convergence of soft acoustic guitar with hip-hop influenced rhythmic sensibilities and a heavy leaning on samples from turn of the century recordings of ‘sacred harp’ acapella recordings

huh??

well, we should’ve known that that description would make complete sense once we actually heard the album.

derek webb announces new album,’ctrl’, and fall tour
derek webb ctrl

there’s a burning question we’ve all been asking ourselves for a very long time:

what do you find at the convergence of soft acoustic guitar with hip-hop influenced rhythmic sensibilities and a heavy leaning on samples from turn of the century recordings of ‘sacred harp’ acapella recordings?

yes, life’s mysteries…

chances are, not only have you never asked this question, but you’re now just utterly confused.

best albums of 2012 so far

well, we’ve made it through the first half of 2012. all in all, i think it’s been a decent year for music. there’s been a few great albums and even more good albums (with plenty of, um, not so great albums). i think we’ve yet to hear what will ultimately become the year’s best music, but no doubt, i expect many/most of these albums to make it onto my end-of-the-year list.

so with that said, here’s my favorite albums of 2012 (so far):
