Thank God it's #MixDay: 20+ Years of Awesome (Ryan Byrd)

ladies and gentlemen, #MixDay is back for 2010! [cue the applause] much like a lot of people, i've spent plenty of time pontificating on the past 10 years of music, looking at the best and worst of the decade. so i thought it was high time to look back at the previous two decades of awesome. the 80's and 90's were the best of times and the worst of times. on one hand, the 80's brought us the musical styling of one hall & oates, but we were also forced to survive years of hair metal and dudes in makeup. and, of course, the 90's brought us so much good…but then there was the wilson phillips years.

so, buckle up for this stroll down memory lane.

Thank God it's #MixDay: 20+ Years of Awesome

Thank God it's #MixDay: Best of 2009

several months ago, we kicked off the inaugural round of abpg's #MixDay. no doubt about it, it's been a huge success. we've had everything from 80s pop to singing poop to pirates in your pants. certainly, it's been good so far.

we'll be back next week with a whole new slate of mixtapers, so be sure to check back here next friday. you'll see some old names and some new ones, so it's sure to be an extra helping of awesome in 2010.

to kick off the year, though, we're gonna take a look back. we've taken a single track from each person's mixtape to create a best of 2009 mix. (the song choice/order was determined by what order people went. for example, paula was in the 5th week, so we picked her track #5 from her previously-submitted mix.)

Thank God it's #MixDay: YES! We Graduated!

UPDATE: it has come to our attention that there was a technical issue with the previously linked, Thank God it's #MixDay: YES! We Graduated!. apparently, in the place of the correctly labeled a.m. radio by everclear, was the seminal 2001 track by ludacris, what's your fantasy. this was not justin myers' favorite track from his senior year. it was actually his 2nd favorite track. the everclear track is, indeed, his 1st favorite.

so, the zipped file has been updated to reflect the proper track. if you don't want to re-download the entire album, you can click here to download the single everclear track.

sorry for the mixup justin!

(oh, and because we never heard from our favorite internet editor, lance turner, several mixtapers decided to play the role of prognosticator and take a crack at what his favorite track of 1995 might have been.....hope you enjoy it.....) :)

this week, we bring you a special early edition of Thank God it's #MixDay that brings together all of ABPG's mixtapers, titled "YES! We Graduated!". this mix features each person's favorite track from their senior year of high school, so it spans a lot of years, a lot of genres and a lot of regretful musical selections... so, from the fine young cannibals singing in a strange, high-pitched voice to andre 3000 belting out lines about shaking it like a polaroid picture, we've got the full gambit of senior year awesomeness.

as an aside, it's interesting to note the musical evolution just within the tale end of the 80s to the mid-2000s. particularly, the rise of hip hop in mainstream, teenage culture is interesting. the rock/pop angst of the 90s was more or less replaced by the rise of eminem, outkast and radio-friendly hip hop at the dawn of the new millennium. so, it would be interesting to see where this mix ends up in another 20 years.

alright, enough musical pontification. enjoy!

Thank God it's #MixDay: YES! We Graduated!

1989: She Drives Me Crazy / Fine Young Cannibals :: Mark Friedman
1989: Kid Fears / Indigo Girls :: Jennifer Pyron

Thank God it's #MixDay: Tre Baker

the music is great. the mix is sublime. the attention to musical detail is impeccable. but ladies and gentlemen, just take a look at internet editor tre baker's artwork. is it an overstatement to say that this artwork is the eddie murphy of #MixDay art?? ok, so maybe you don't want your musical endeavors to be compared to eddie murphy's movie career, but you get the point. oh wait...not just the artwork, but when you hear track #18 comes pulsing through your headphones, your day is going to be immediately more awesome.

welcome to our little corner of heaven called #MixDay

hello all. welcome to the new home of arkansas business publishing group's foray into what the good people @cjrwInteractive have dubbed Thank God it's #MixDay. instead of thinking of this as us ripping them off (which we certainly are...), we like to think of it as a collaborative effort amongst little rock's creatives. see how we word that to make it fit our agenda? beautiful.

after much weeping and gnashing of teeth (you'll notice that i'm posting this a little after 2 a.m.), the site is up, running and ready to hit you with many weeks worth of possibly sordid and likely lurid mixtapes from the fine folks at ABPG. instead of simply offering mixes from a single department, our #MixDay selections will feature people from designers to account executives to the coffee-driven folks back in editorial. so, it should be a sorted bunch of mixtapes. due to the relatively large number of participants, instead of a single mix each week, you'll get two (and one week will have three). so, double your money.

we'll try to post these by, at least, noon on friday, but we actually do work around here, so we'll play it by ear.

if you want to keep up-to-date with the goings-on here at #MixDay central, you can do one of a few things. you can, a.) obsessively hit refresh in browser all day on fridays, b.) follow @ryanbyrd on twitter where immediate #MixDay updates will given or, c.) subscribe to our rss feed.

so, happy listening. the first mixes—from myself and @LT (lance turner)—will be up in a matter of hours.
